Tidewater

Where America Begins

The Historic Tidewater region is comprised of the seven cities of Hampton Roads, the Virginia and Middle Peninsulas, the Northern Neck, and the Eastern Shore. The Virginia Peninsula is the site of Virginia’s Historic Triangle of Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg, and Yorktown. Hampton Roads is celebrated as the” world’s greatest natural harbor,” with a port located only 18 miles from open ocean in ice-free water. The harbor serves as a major commercial highway for the area, with a robust economy centered on shipbuilding and repair, cargo transfer, and import/exports. Four Fortune 500 companies call Hampton Roads home, and Huntington Ingalls Industries, just up the James River, is home to the world’s largest shipyard.

A Living History

The Historic Triangle is the site of Colonial Williamsburg, one of the largest tourist attractions in the nation. Williamsburg is renowned as America’s largest living-history museum, with an entire district of the city restored to 18th century conditions. Historical reenactors wear period attire and recreate major events such as visits by George Washington. Visitors are able to walk through the historic district free of charge.

Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in North America, is preserved as “Historic Jamestowne,” an archaeological preserve located at the settlement’s original site. Jamestown Settlement, a living-history park and museum located just over a mile from the original site, was created in 1957 for Jamestown’s 350th anniversary.

Williamsburg is home to the College of William and Mary, the second-oldest institute of higher education in the country. William and Mary alumni include three U.S. Presidents (including Thomas Jefferson), four signers of the Declaration of Independence, and a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (John Marshall), hence its nickname “the alma mater of the nation.” The area is also home to Christopher Newport University, Old Dominion University, and Eastern Virginia Medical School.
