Buckingham
Buckingham, also known as Buckingham Courthouse, is the county seat of Buckingham County, Virginia. Homes for sale in Buckingham are predominantly single-family homes on large plots of land, ranging in size from small cottages to large historic mansions. Much of the real estate surrounding the village is rural, however, which adds to the village’s historic, country charm. Despite being the county seat, Buckingham isn’t an incorporated town – the only chartered town in Buckingham County is Dillwyn.
Buckingham County was formed from the southern section of Albemarle County in 1761. The county seat of Buckingham, originally called Maysville, was established in 1818. At the center of the village is the Buckingham Court House Historic District, which contains the historic brick courthouse complex and several other nearby structures. The first courthouse was built in 1822 using plans designed by Thomas Jefferson. When the original courthouse building burned down in 1869, it was rebuilt to similar specifications in 1873. Other buildings in the Buckingham Court House Historic District include the Trinity Presbyterian Church, the Masonic Hall, and numerous early 19th-century residences.
Buckingham residents enjoy close proximity to some of the best outdoor recreation spots in Central Virginia – Holliday Lake State Park, Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest, and Horsepen Lake Wildlife Management Area are all a short drive away. The town is located less than an hour from both Charlottesville and Lynchburg, so residents don’t have to sacrifice city amenities for small-town charm.
