Nellysford
Nellysford is a growing community in Nelson County, Virginia, located in the Rockfish Valley along Virginia State Route 151. Nellysford homes are popular for their easy access to the cities of Charlottesville, Waynesboro, and Lynchburg, as well as the close proximity to Wintergreen and the resort’s amenities. Stoney Creek Golf Course, one of Wintergreen Resort’s two courses, is in Nellysford.
Many Nellysford homes and buildings are historic, some dating as far back as the 1700s. Elk Hill, originally built between 1790 and 1810, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. The 2-story house has undergone numerous additions and renovations in its 200-year history, making it a striking example of architectural style and construction techniques over the last two centuries. The other Nellysford structure on the National Register of Historic Places is the Wintergreen Store, a country store from the 1920s that is now home to the Rockfish Valley Foundation’s Natural History Center.
In recent decades, the area around Nellysford has become known as the “Craft Beverage Trail” for its numerous wineries, cideries, breweries, and distilleries. Wild Wolf Brewing Company, Bold Rock Hard Cider, Hill Top Winery, and Devil’s Backbone Brewing Company all call Nellysford home. These popular destinations for food and drink, as well as Wintergreen Resort and the numerous B&Bs and country inns, make Nelson “Virginia’s weekend address.”
