Afton
Having it All, Away from it All
Afton is situated 20 miles west of Charlottesville in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Originally located along the old C&O railroad, Afton first earned renown as a haven for tourists who were seeking a rural escape from city living. Rockfish Gap, a wind gap cutting through the Blue Ridge and Afton Mountain, joins the Shenandoah Valley with the Virginia Piedmont and is the mountain crossing of Interstate 64 and US Route 250. Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway meet just north of the gap, and the Appalachian Trail and CSX Railroad (formerly C&O) pass through the gap. Thanks in no small part to being a major intersection in a spectacular natural area, Afton now sees over millions of tourists pass through on a yearly basis.
